NASA is developing a concept of operations for the integration of remotely-piloted, unmanned cargo operations in the NAS under the ATM-X for the Pathfinding for Airspace with Autonomous Vehicles (PAAV) subproject. The PAAV subproject will identify potential risks/hazards/impacts to air traffic controllers and pilots that may arise from integration of PAAV flights in the NAS. This position will facilitate the development of use cases highlighting challenging situations for the integration of these operations into the NAS, including into different airspace classes and phases of flight.

Job Responsibilities

• Provides expertise in Air Traffic Management operations to various research activities at NASA Ames Research Center including insights and information on enroute, terminal, and tower operations and procedures within the National Airspace System, and oceanic Air Traffic Control procedures in the ICAO environment.
• Is expected to research applicable FAA documents and procedures to ensure that NASA studies and simulations are conducted in a test environment that demonstrates the NAS accurately and completely as possible.
• Provide resource management for projects, which may include development of supporting documentation, notional airspace designs, and training NASA research teams and participants ATC airspace, operations, and procedures that support NASA simulations and research.

Required Education/Skills

• Recent retirement from the FAA
• Familiar with ATC operations in all operations including enroute, TRACON, and tower
• Knowledge of where to find applicable procedures and regulations (i.e., FAA Orders, CFRs, LOAs, AIM, ect.) and how they are currently applied to ATC, the NAS, and the aviation industry
• Knowledge of flight operations
• Able to work cooperatively with others.
• Availability to attend remotely hosted meetings during business hours in Pacific Time

Other

• Must be local to the NASA Ames commuting area.
• May work remotely. However, support of research will require the SME to be on site to support NASA simulations and research.
