Senior Accountant, Tax and Compliance

Objective/Summary

The Senior Accountant, Tax and Compliance is responsible for managing the company's federal, state, and local compliance as it relates to regulatory registration, sales and use tax, personal property, waterway exemptions, and other mandatory requirements. This role is instrumental in ensuring Curtin Maritime remains in compliance with all required regulations and leverages available exemptions.

Responsibilities/Goals
  1. General Compliance - ensure Curtin remains current and in good standing with federal, state and local municipalities in which registration is required and make timely filings of all business registration renewals.
  2. Watercraft exemptions - responsible for maintaining tax exemptions for qualified vessels
  3. Property tax compliance subject matter expert in maritime and state/local municipality regulations based on location of property and ensure timely, accurate filing of returns
  4. Sales and use tax compliance subject matter expert in sales and use tax regulations for all states/municipalities Curtin operates in and ensure timely, accurate filing of returns
  5. Process improvement - ensure tax liability is accurately and timely captured, developing processes to capture data at the transaction level and maintaining a database to ensure fleet visibility and filing / renewal deadlines are met
  6. Financial statement preparation prepare balance sheet account reconciliations and subsequent journal entries related to month-end close, provide audit support
Qualifications and Aptitudes Required
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in a tax compliance role with a multi-jurisdictional enterprise
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification or public accounting experience strongly preferred
Mental Aptitudes
  • Proficiency in accounting software, ERP systems and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills, with a strategic mindset
  • Thorough knowledge of general accounting principle and practices
  • Ability to interact with all levels of management
  • Must be able to exercise good judgment and demonstrate strong work ethic
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task, in a busy office environment
  • Desire to get it right combined with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
  • Must comply with all work rules, including those that pertain to safety and health
Physical Aptitudes
  • This is primarily a sedentary role.
  • Vision or correctible vision to 20/20.
  • The work environment includes the frequent use of stairs.
  • Ability to work in an office environment and follow HS&E safety protocols when walking through a maritime construction area.
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, office phones, smartphones, and photocopiers.
